interopiO® & HL7® SMART™

Why HL7 SMART?

The HL7 SMART Application Launch Framework enables secure application launching over FHIR services such as FHIR-enabled provider and patient portals. The framework includes support for patient and provider apps that launch from within a portal or standalone. The application data access is authorized via an OAuth2 service evaluating the scopes that the application requests and issuing access tokens. The protocol provides launch context to the application that includes user data, patient identifier (if applicable), custom values and more. A SMART application can be implemented in a variety of application development frameworks and can run on a secure server or on a user’s device.

Support for HL7 SMART

interopiO is a powerful platform designed to enable the full potential of the HL7 SMART ecosystem. The makers of interopiO, Interopion, were instrumental in the creation and ultimate success of HL7 SMART beginning in 2012. Interopion created the first SMART apps and have since gone on to build more SMART apps than any other organization. interopiO has been designed to overcome the real world challenges that exist in building, distributing, and supporting SMART Apps based on Interopion's real world experience being on the front lines of this emerging ecosystem.

interopiO fully implements the latest HL7 FHIR SMART Application Launch Framework (v1.0.0) as defined in http://www.hl7.org/fhir/smart-app-launch/ including the OAuth2 based SMART authorization framework, access scopes, refresh tokens, profile context, custom app context, provider portal app launch, provider standalone app launch, patient portal launch, patient standalone launch.

Common interopiO SMART on FHIR Use Cases

interopiO Implements and Supports the SMART on FHIR Specification

HL7 has published the first release of the SMART Application Launch Framework Implementation Guide Release 1.0.0. interopiO provides full support for this IG including all published profiles:

  • Public applications
  • Confidential applications
  • Standalone applications
  • Background applications

interopiO’s implementation of SMART also includes an enterprise grade OAuth server supporting the complete gamma ot SMART authorization profiles including shared secret, refresh tokens, grant revocation, custom context setup. Additionally, we support all available SMART scopes that applications can request including profile and offline scopes.

An interopiO powered SMART enabled FHIR endpoint also includes a faithful implementation of the two SMART conformance statements:

  • FHIR Capability Statement
  • Well-known Uniform Resource Identifiers JSON file

Further, interopiO Provider Portals provides a way for subscribers to create their own SMART on FHIR-based decision support portal to launch any number of registered SMART Apps for testing, demonstration & sales, and/or production use.
